Sony reveals work on a "future platform" already under way

Masaru Kato, Sony’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, has confirmed that work on a “future platform” to succeed the PlayStation 3 is already under way, following an important call to investors where he was asked to explain the increased costs in research and development.
"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said, "but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."
This revelation by Kato contradicts the statement made by Sony Computer Entertainment head honcho, Kaz Hirai, who in March said a “next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now". Hirai also emphasised that Sony is no where near the half-way point in the PS3’s life cycle.
Stay tuned.

This is not something new. Since the January of 2006, Sony was working on the Ps4.

Honestly how long ago was it that we started hearing realistic rumors about the NGP or even the slim PS3 before they were announced. These things take years and with a 10 year life span on the PS3 that doesnt mean that it has to take 10 years before they release a PS4 just that the PS3 would last that long... still I dont see it releasing before holiday 2013.

I believe there are at least few factors that Sony is thinking about.
1. Nintendo - What if their console released next year is $250 (U.S.) and is significantly better than the PS3 is? Sony must be doing everything possible to get the PS3 down to $200 ASAP. They cannot cost more and be a significantly worse console.
2. Cell or Intel? Big decision and my money is on Intel now. I think IBM and the architecture of the PS3 has really made Sony mad and they don't want to repeat those same decisions.
3. Video card? Do they go proprietary or not?
My prediction is an Android based Intel based system with an ATI graphics chipset. It will have a 4X or 8X BR drive and be software compatible with the current PS3. I can see it with a 1GB graphics card and 1GB of system RAM. I hope the cost is $300. This will maintain the current PS3 owners and hopefully pull in a few more customers. I would also suggest that they include a motion conroller setup AND a family pack in game.
