Rumor: PS Vita's Party voice chat feature coming to PS3?

The PlayStation Vita will feature at launch a cross-game voice chat via its Party system. You can think of Party as a built-in mini-social network that allows you to create and host voice chat rooms, invite friends, and allow everyone in your party to see what you are playing and hop into your online game.

We had a demo on the last day of E3 immediately following a hands-on WipEout 2048 experience. Ramana Prakash, manager of Sony Computer Entertainment America’s online technology group, explained that Party allows you to chat with anyone in your group no matter what game you are playing. This has long been a demand of PlayStation 3 gamers, and after seeing how remarkably well it works on Vita, it seems logical the feature will makes its way to Sony’s console.

When asked when we’ll see Party on the PS3, Prakash quickly made it clear that “we are only announcing it for the Vita.” However, quickly after that comment, another rep from Sony, who asked to be anonymous, hinted that we’ll likely see this feature make its way to the PS3.

Beyond the anonymous comment, it would make a lot of sense that Party will eventually come to the PS3 because of Vita’s ability to seamlessly network with the PS3. For instance, our demo of WipEout 2048 put three of us together competing through the PlayStation Network. Two of us played on Vitas and one played on the PS3. This ability is unique, and best of all, it works like a charm. We experienced no lag and we can’t wait to see what other creative things Sony will do with this ability.

The actual Party system is remarkable in person. It’s fast, the voice chat is smooth, and the ability to join a friend in game happens in seconds. Prakash showed how someone invited him to a room to chat, then his friend started to play WipEout 2048, which he could see through a little logo below that friend’s name. At the touch of the screen on the Vita he joined his friend and was ready to compete.

Expect to hear more about Vita’s Party system and with any luck, PS3 fans will get their own party chat feature—and maybe it will connect with the Vita service as well.

I like the idea, and I'm loving everything about the Vita so far.

I imagine it was a lot easier to design XGC with new hardware than trying to force it into a system that wasn't designed for it. I hope it comes to PS3 though, but we'll see.

Yeah, this is true and not rumor.

Still a rumor until it's confirmed. Just because Wipeout connected to a PS3 to play a game doesnt mean the chat feature exists on the system. As for the PS3 not being designed for it, It's not that the system wasnt designed to do it, it was designed to be evolvable, But I think the problem is finding the spare processing power to deal with chatting outside of the game if most of the system is handling the game how much of the one extra processor that controls the XMB can be dedicated to voice as opposed to something simple like text chat, without it bogging the system down.

    That is f'n awesome.

@4 - Actually, processor wise, Sony is covered, it's Ram that's the factor.

@2 Yeah, I doubt it. SONY has been trying to get more and more RAM available for developers for games...

@5 I'm guessing that's a big reason why it won't happen. I'd rather have devs have all the RAM they can get for games, than get some fancy feature...

If this feature makes it to the PS3 i think it will cost money. It maybe be available only for plus members perhaps like some sort of subscription.

I won't believe it until it's officially implemented on PS3. It's been the most asked feature for YEARSSSSS and it's a mandatory feature and PS3 still hasn't received it. Sony dropped the ball with that one, and not even an official statement. If I get a PS3 (my other one wasn't working 100% and since the 360 has many mandatory and big features the PS3 doesn't, a 360 is also on the table), I will get it used because I refuse to give Sony money after none of the mandatory features that has been asked by consumers for YEARS now hasn't been implemented yet.

If this was to happen, i can only assume a whole redesign of the In game xmb because we can't use like 85% of it and to lessen the ram it uses to make space for cross game chat.

@11 What are you trying to say?

@11 No, I hope your nasty and ugly troll self won't be on PSN. Stay on XBL, if that's where you are.

@12 If the feature would take away RAM from developers, then I hope it doesn't happen. You silly chatter girlfriends should find another way of scratching your itch...

If Sony announces cross game chat like how it is on the NGP (I prefer to keep calling it that), I am going to buy another PS3 just for the heck of it.  My pre-order for the NGP is already done.

It\'s funny how people get pissed off at Sony for not having cross-game chat. But then again it\'s free.

any of you who havent experienced cross game chat on xbox already are in for a surprise to find that it can be kind of annoying. Im going to have to turn down invites often and regulate the parties I create. When im playing a single player game, sorry but I dont want to chat. I want to game it. Playing online in two different games is ok but when others join in and say nothing or do whatever, then there is a prob. I hope there will be a private inv option. (which is only common sense to have)

hey could of more applications an more features in the ps vita i was a little let down about it but the touch interface is great. the new technology we have in the game industry is awsome an dont know why sony didn't put 3D compatibility in the ps vita or infared sensors in it like the kinect cause it is a buy this product instead of that one sort of thing?_ but thats my say on the ps vita this redrumredrum613 saying
