Sony has confirmed that PlayStation 3 moved 1.8 million units during Q1 FY2011, marking a drop of 600,000 units when compared to the same period last year.
The figure brings life-to-date sales of the company’s flagship console to approximately 51.8 million worldwide. By comparison, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 has sold 55 million units globally.
Meanwhile, PS3 software sales clocked in at 26.1 million, representing an increase of 1.3 million over FY2010. Game sales for PlayStation Portable were also on the rise, jumping from 1.2 million to 1.8 million.
PlayStation 2 software, meanwhile, declined from 1.6 million to 1.4 million.
Sony posted a net loss of 15.5 billion yen ($191 million), a strike contrast to last year’s profit of 25.7 billion yen.
