 Tim Willits, creative director of id Software, said in an interview (with Digital Foundry) that the PlayStation 3 version of its upcoming game Rage will require an 8 gigabyte game install, and the Xbox 360 version will utilize three discs.

Willits praised the hardware for PlayStation 3, saying, "What we were able to do is install all the textures to the highest level. What is nice about the PS3 platform is that it's just one platform. Everyone has one Blu-ray drive, one hard drive, it's all the same."

He also announced the versatility Rage will have with the three discs for the Xbox 360 version. "If you don't have the space available on your hard drive, don't stress. Install the first disc, the first chapter, the first half of the game, then when you're done, uninstall and install disc two."

Rage is scheduled for release on Oct. 4 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

    I'm sure people will moan about the PS3 install, but it beats installing one disc, uninstalling, then installing another... or indeed installing all ~30GB from 3 DVDs.

     @2

    The install on the 360 is completely optional.

     Sweet one big install.  No multiple disks.  I\'m cool with that.  That\'s why every PS3 ships with a hard drive.  To put stuff on it.

    I don't even have 8GB i storage left on my hard drive... it's laughable that they expect that large of an install.

    Looks like blu-ray FTW!  @Dantess, you can always upgrade your hard drive.  It's really easy - do a backup, swap out the hard drive for a bigger one, then do a restore.

    Large capacity hard drives are fairly cheap now... if you're moaning about lack of hard drive space, do yourself a favor and put off buying another game for a bit and upgrade your HDD.  It's super easy.  I have 500GB in mine with over 200GB remaining.

    Thanks for sharing Timothy. I was really in search for an advice. It's not that cool if you ask me to install multiple disks, but if you need to play :D
