Pachter: Rumored PlayStation Orbis might not be backed by Gamestop

Michael Pachter, a well-known analyst for Wedbush Morgan Securities, has expressed his views for the recently rumored PlayStation Orbis – what some are saying might be Sony’s next console.

In regards to the rumor that Sony would pretty much nullify used game sales for their next console (by forcing users to register their physical media to a server), he speculates that the Japanese hardware giant would not actually move forward with such plans.

“"It isn't really in Sony's or Microsoft's best interests to block used games. It would benefit Activision and EA slightly, and would hurt GameStop a great deal,” said Pachter to GameIndustry.biz.

“If Sony unilaterally did this, I could see GameStop refusing to carry their console, and sales of the PS4 would therefore suffer," he added.

Pachter then went on to stress that this decision would be a mistake on Sony’s part if they were to indeed move forward with this strategy independent of Microsoft and Nintendo.

"If one does it and the others don't, the one who does it will see a loss of market share," he said.

So what do you think? Are the rumors of Sony and Microsoft abandoning the used game market true? We wonder if Sony would risk being shunned by Gamestop to move forward with this vision.

A rumor is a rumor. Everyone should just wait till Sony spits something out about it, then go from there.

It's normal though, same ol next gen rumor crap. =)

I normally hate Pachter as hes the worst of the worst but he speaks the truth about, If one does it the others don't, the one that does will fail.

CD keys are they way to go, which would be up to the devs/publishers not Sony/MS/Nintendo unless your talking about their games.

This same romor was said about the next Xbox. Funny how I didn't see one analyst comment on that. The Sony media criticism is already building and no one even knows what the actual hardware specs are.

As far as Gamestop goes, I could give a rats butt if they go away forever! They've been making their customers bend over and take it for years on their so called "used game prices". Yeah, paying out 10-15 dollars for a game, turning around and selling for 50-55 dollars is such a great deal. \sarcasm\

Don't like this idea at all. I buy a lot of used games, especially older games that I wouldn't pay RRP for.

That being said, this sounds like a load of bollocks anyway, so I'm not worried.

If sony were to go that route, it would be finacial suicide. They would be better off quitting the gaming scene.Same if they were to go full on digital only gaming.

Evil, noone forces anyone to selll their used games to Gamestop and noone forces anyone to buy used. Just saying...

    @faaeng

True. But when you create a used game store monopoly in some cities, what choice do people have? EB games and Gamestop are the only places in my city. The only other places that can afford to stay in business are stores that sell an array of used goods. Problem with that is people don't think of a used record store as a place to trade in video games. I don't buy used so it don't affect me, whatsoever. I just don't care that their ripping off children that don't know no better. I get your point though. ;)

I totally agree with Evilincarnate.EB Games and similar stores gauge the customer. If I originally paid $70 for a new game then trade it in they usually give around $10 then sell it for $30 or $40.I'd rather burn the disc than allow them to make even more profit off of me.
