Sony is likely to slash the price of PlayStation 3 at E3 in June in order to stimulate lagging sales, reckons analyst Michael Pachter.
Speaking in a March NPD preview, Pachter also reckons competitor Microsoft will unveil a price cut at the Los Angeles-based convention due to slowing sales.
"PS3 hardware sales should continue to lag those of the Xbox 360, and we expect sales to trend downward by 10 - 20% monthly, until Sony cuts prices once again, likely at E3," said Pachter.
"Recent slowing of Xbox 360 hardware sales could cause Microsoft to consider a price cut by E3."
Elsewhere, the Wedbush Morgan analyst doesn’t anticipate any next-gen console announcements this year.
"We do not expect an announcement of a next- generation console from Microsoft until the Xbox 360 core model is priced below $200, likely around this time next year."
Sony has been rumored to unveil plans for a successor to the PS3 at E3, though PlayStation overlord Kaz Hirai publicly denied any such plans are in the pipeline.

Not sure if Sony can afford another price cut. Last year Sony made a "strategic" ( as explained to their shareholders) price cut. MS did not cut the price on the 360 in 2011 but offered good bundle pricing.
Patcher is refering to North American sales, however Sony's strategic price cut did not keep the 360 from becoming the top selling console in 2011 worldwide.

A price drop would be cool to me. I want to replace all my fattys with slims to save power, so the used consoles will go down a bit, but I doubt they will drop by E3. I need 3 more to finish my farm.

In other shock predictions Pachter declares it likely that it may rain in the UK during the summer and that Modern Warfare IV will top the charts.
If this guy is being paid for this 'analysis' I think I could probably do his job. It's more 'stating the bleeding obvious' than in-depth analysis! -

please, journalists and gamers, stop giving this useless guy any attention AT ALL
if noone quotes him for a few months, let's hope he retires in a farway cabin and dies of hunger/thirst as he would be so stupid to be able to survive by himself
