E3 2012: PS3 still has 'a long way to go yet,' says SCEE

Sony has moved to play down suggestions that PlayStation 3 is in its twilight years, insisting its flagship console still has ‘a long way to go yet.’
Quizzed as to whether the company’s strong showcase for PS3 at this year’s E3 was a sign that the system is on its way out, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) boss Jim Ryan responded:
“No I don’t think that’s the case. What struck me at the conference was the sheer amount of innovation – at our conference at least – and I think that’s really indicative of a platform that’s got a long way to go yet.”
For those of you not keeping track, PS3 is quickly approaching its sixth birthday in the U.S. and Japan, having launched there back in November 2006. PAL territories received the console in March 2007.
While Sony is keeping mum on the subject of a next-gen console, it is widely speculated that PlayStation 4 (as well as Xbox 720) will be showcased at E3 2013.

We don't need a PS4 it is too early the PS3 has so much more to give as developers are just now getting familiar with how to use the programming on the PS3 and pushing it to it's limits. I see it going for another 4 years before they bring a new console. Does anyone remember when the PS3 was first launched Sony said it would be their last console?

@3 - Releasing PS4, does not mean their support for PS3 will cease.
@4 - Adorable comment as always, but 2 years is the analysts' average estimate. 2 years seems accurate to me as well.
@PSU, your comment system platform integration to login and pasting, is a complete FAIL. It isn't 1998 anymore, invest some time into polishing it.

considering technology to be exponential in terms of how advanced it gets you have to assume that the faster they hop on to the next console the sooner they can get going with advancing other engines and programming techniques. They can release games for ps3 even with ps4 out, but to dumb down the technology or to hold it off just to squeeze a few years out of the ps3 is selfish and greedy. share the fun Sony!
