Sony: PS Vita processor gives it advantage over Wii U pad

Sony has lobbed fresh mud at rival Nintendo’s Wii U GamePad, suggesting PlayStation Vita boasts a distinct advantage over the device thanks to the inclusion of a processor.
Speaking with GI.biz, Scott Rhode, vice president of Sony Worldwide Studios, commented, “Because we have the Vita, I think we can do a lot of special things. And remember, that Wii U tablet doesn't have a processor in it, so it's got to be fuelled by that box sitting under your TV.”
"We can do some pretty special things that you'll start to see on the [E3] floor this year and you'll see more over the upcoming months about what you can do when you actually have a processor in the thing that's in your hand as well.”
Rhode went on to champion one of PS Vita’s most important features, namely cross-platform play with PS3, as supported by games such as the upcoming PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
"And when you start to see how you can cross over between the two platforms - look at two of the titles that are here at E3, PlayStation All-Stars and Sly 4, for example. Both available on Vita and PS3, and there's some sort of interactivity across the board. Developers are interested in that kind of stuff,” he said.
PlayStation Vita was released in Japan last December and hit western shores in February of this year. Wii U meanwhile is scheduled for a late 2012 launch across all major territories.

@1 Well, no, but it is a home console. The PS3 controller can't be disconnected or used as a handhled either. Think of how expensive it would be if the Wii U's controller had a processor in it so that it can be used as a standalone device. The point of it is that you can use the controller as a screen for certain games if the TV's being used, but it must be connected to the actual console itself, so you'd need to stay within a certain distance. So in that sense, it is a handheld, however it's not completely portable like the Vita or 3DS, as it relies on a connection to the Wii U.

You won't be able to game that long with the Wii-U Gamepad either, unless you leave it connected via the cable. I read somewhere that the battery only lasts 2-and-a-half hours when used wireless.

The whole point iskinda mute anyway, as there are about 63 million PS3 owners without a Vita. The Wii U controller comes with a console that will probably cost as much as the Vita. But yeah, technically, the Vita/PS3 combo is far superior to that of the Wii.

The Wii U is kind of a rip off since the pad/controller will not even come with the cod sole, sounds abit stupid that it doesn't, I think people will just buy the old Wiimote since it's about $110 cheaper and that can also be used on the Wii U, I predict their home console will fail to beat Sony and Mircosoft again, the Wii might of sold lots of units but it was kinda disappointing really

@6 But the Vita and PS3 are standalone devices that are sold separately. The point is that the Wii U Gamepad comes with the Wii U. I don't get why people are expecting it to be a console and portable handheld bundle. If the Vita could be used as a PS3 controller AND came with the PS3 console, it would be a different argument entirely!
@9 Exactly!
