Sony Computer Entertainment looks set to release a new Super Slim PlayStation 3 model, if recent documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission are anything to go by.
According to the documents, the new model will form part of the new PS3 4000 series, a step up from the current 3000 SKUs. As spotted by Pocket News, the filing mentions the CECH-4001x model, which Eurogamer speculates will be announced at Gamescom in mid-August.
Further snooping within the documents reveals an image that shows the 4000 model stacked up against a previous iteration of Sony’s flagship console, which includes a new position for the FCC label.
With PS3 entering the latter stages of its life, speculation has run rampant that the hardware manufacturer may release an even slimmer model following the launch of the original PS3 Slim in 2009.
In fact, Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios, said that the company’s hardware buffs are frequently looking at ways to reduce costs and trim the fat. Could this mean that the PS3 Super Slim is secretly in the pipeline?
We’ll keep you posted.

Man, screw that! I don't like the slim that much as is, matter of fact, just sold one of mine, and replaced it with a 40gb fatty. If the rumor is true, I wonder how ugly it's gonna be?

Why not. I'm sure they can pull it off. If they do release a super slim PS3. Then I have a feeling the PS4 is going to be pretty small as well. I love my original fat 60gb PS3. Wouldn't trade it in for any other PS3.

I agree with the general concensus, why the heck not? I'm hoping if this is true, that it looks considerably better than the current Slim. I hate how they ditched the original PS3 design in branding and replaced everything with the Slim. The original PS3 looked vastly better, and I feel like I've been alienated by the fact that they don't display it anywhere. If they intend to do that again, I'm hoping the Super Slim looks more akin to the original PS3 design.
