PlayStation Germany boss Uwe Bassendowski has revealed to Playfront that life-to-date sales figures for the PlayStation Vita stand at 2.2 million worldwide.
Up until now Sony has generally remained tight-lipped in regards to how well its new handheld is performing on a global basis, with the last update coming on February 26. Back then, PS Vita had sold 1.2 million.
Elsewhere, a user on NeoGAF claims that sales of the portable games console are lagging way behind that of what previous handheld platforms achieved during the same point in their lifecycle.
To put it into context, PlayStation Portable managed 5.05 million units during the same time frame, 3DS 6.68 million, DS 6.65 million and Game Boy Advance 9.58 million.
PS Vita has struggled lately due to lack of killer software, though Sony has promised the lull in software will soon be remedied with the arrival of a number of major fist and third-party games such as LittleBigPlanet, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.
The handheld launched in December 2011 in Japan and arrived in the U.S. and Europe back in February.

This is crazy bad. They need a price cut on it to salvage sales. While I am aware that wouldn't really be cost effective, the product is a pretty dire state of afairs.
