TGS 2012: Metal Gear Revengeance story trailer is mind-blowing

Platinum Games and Kojima Productions released an enthralling, over-the-top trailer for its upcoming action title Metal Gear Rising Revengeance.

Though the trailer is completely in Japanese, it shows off some gameplay mechanics that look to accentuate the action-heavy style portrayed in previous trailers. Stealth looks to play a part in the game as well, as Raiden moves through some of the different areas without being detected and taking out enemies that way; he even takes control of a Dwarf Gekko from MGS4 and uses it to shock enemies to death.

One of the more interesting things to the trailer was a boss battle. We've already seen the cyborg ninja that defeats him early on, which is also shown in this trailer, but a female boss holds quite an intriguing resemblance of Screaming Mantis from MGS4. The fight also shows Raiden using his cutting abilities to break away from grapples that this female boss uses on him, cutting his way out of them and escaping.

Little humorous antics normally found in MGS titles find their way in here as well, with Raiden disguising himself in an oversized sombrero and Dwarf Gekkos doing funny things after being cut. The five-minute trailer goes all over the place in a glorious collection of action-packed sequences and gameplay styles. Let us know what you think of the trailer. Being a strong MGS fan, I'm become more and more interested in this title as more content has been shown. Do the rest of you feel the same way, or do you think otherwise?

The only people who don't seem to like this game, don't understand that this isn't a traditional tactical espionage action Metal Gear Solid. This is a spin-off title, heavy on stylish combat. And it looks to be the best action focused game that  a Metal Gear game could be.

That's a really good point. In fact, I think that other action games will look at this as a potential new standard. The sheer amount of things happening at once looks as daunting as it does entertaining.

@1 I disagree with you COMPLETELY. That is NOT the reason why alot of people (including myself) dont like the game. Many (not all) people came to terms with the fact that it wouldn't be that kind of game shortly after it was announced that it would be ore gritty. The first gameplay trailer for this was absolutely remarkable. The Fox engine version showed so much promise. If you look at the feedback it got then compared to what its getting now, you would see that for yourself. It is when it went over to Platinum games, it went down the gutter and most people started hating it. Dont fool yourself into thinking the game's fate of being hated was inescapable, because of its concept because alot of the same people who hate it now, were liking it before PG got involved.  We hate the game NOW because:

    1. The graphics are MUCH worse.
    2. The gameplay is nowhere NEAR as smooth. Even in the latest trailer you still see jolting in the fight animations and framerate constantly dropping and picking up. Very distracting.
    3. They changed the game from being the story between 2 and 4 (a useful addition to the series), to some crappy spinoff title with a very generic story that is something of a current gen version of the game Eve of Extinction from ps2. What sucks the most is that it doesnt even make sense to the story. PSEUDO SPOILER At the end of mgs4 Raiden tells Rose and his son that hes done running away, and here he is becoming Jack the Ripper again? Um what?

I would ignore the glaring narrative shortcomings if the game looked like it'd be fun to play regardless, but between all the scripted looking acton, quicktime-esque segments, the cheesy slow motion chopping (that i disliked even in the first trailer), and the chugging, I honestly do not see this game getting above a 7 average. It's highest possible score will be like an 8.

@3Just want to point out, when the original Metal Gear Solid: Rising was announced, there were LOADS of people saying "This isn't Metal Gear, not buying this, where's Snake? Too action packed, cutting people? Oh my god, looks crap"Then AS SOON AS IT became Revengeance, people begun saying "I miss the old one, it was perfect!". Why can no-one be happy??!!! This game looked amazing, so did the old one, but get over it, this is happening, no amount of whining will stop this games existence. Just stop. Both KojiPro and Platinum Games are working very hard to make this game, and it's looking great.1. Get over it, graphics aren't everything, it still looks okay.2. We never saw a FINAL version of the first Rising, you don't know how the framerate would have turned out from one trailer.3. If it was still set between 2 and 4, people would be annoyed that a CANON game was not made by KojiPro. Also, being set after 4 allows Rising to become a series.Don't like it, don't buy it. It's as simple as that, don't go out intent on being horrible to those still liking the game and being horrible to KojiPro and Platinum.
