Crytek teases Crysis future

The developer behind the critically-acclaimed shooter franchise Crysis has said that the series still has legs, though it may dip its toes in other genres besides the FPS market.

Speaking to Dusty Cartridge, Crytek producer Michael Elliot Read said that the sci-fi series is unlikely to wrap after Crysis 3, though it remains unknown if a fourth game will follow the same path as its predecessors.

"You know, I think at this point I don't want to give anything away," said Read. "But I think the Crysis franchise itself has life left in it. Whether it's in a different game type format, whether it's expanding upon this, it's hard to say. That's going to be up to the designers at the end of the day.

"But I think we've built... Crysis was always intended to be a trilogy and I think that over that time we've built a really cool universe. We haven't really gone in and said 'Hey let's put Nano suits and clown suits and stuff and completely violate and sell our IP.'

In conclusion, Read said that while it remains unknown what direction the series will take, Crysis most certainly isn’t retiring to mow the lawn anytime soon.

"We've done a fairly good job at maintaining that, so I think in terms of the universe, we have a lot more life left in that to go back and try some unique stuff. Whether it's FPS or not I have no idea, but there's definitely a future in the franchise."

Crysis 3 is scheduled to ship for PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360 in the U.S. on February 19, with a PAL launch due on February 22.

In addition to working on the shooter sequel, Crytek is also busy beavering away on a follow-up to 2011’s Homefront for THQ and the Kinect fighter Ryse.

Better to just focus on a new IP. I don't really think Crysis is one of those games with a rich and unique universe.
