Sony’s PlayStation 3 has eclipsed the Xbox 360 in global shipments, according to a market analysis document by the International Data Corporation.
As reported by GI.biz, the document by Lewis Ward – titled Worldwide Video Game Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012 – 2016 Forecast – contains shipment figures for both Sony and Microsoft’s current-gen machines as of December 2012.
According to the report, PS3 stands at about 77 million, while Xbox 360 is at 76 million. That’s despite Microsoft’s box getting a 12-month head start on its leading rival and maintaining the advantage ever since – or at least, up until last month.
It added: “Nintendo will still ‘find an audience’ with Wii U, reaching global shipments of 50 million by year-end 2016.”
Again, this is numbers shipped, not how many are actually in the hands of consumers. It’s unknown if the figures were obtained from the platform holders themselves or form part of IDC’s forecast.
Sony said last autumn that PS3 had sold 70.2 million units worldwide as of September 30, 2012.

@3
Actually not impressive.
The PS brand has a 6 year lead on the Xbox brand.
Sony established a PS1 fanbase or over 100m. Sony also launched the PS2 before the 360 and sold 4 to 5 PS2s for every Xbox for a total of over 150m PS2 fanbase.
Compare that to the Xbox fanbase of 24m and you see just how much Sony lost.
Wii more than quadrupled Gamecube sales
360 more than tripled Xbox sales.
Has the market increased by that much or is there a brand that has lost huge market share?
At year 6 the PS2 had well over 100m sales so we can see the loss of market share.
No longer do 4 or 5 Sony home consoles sell for 1 MS console.

@steviej
Don't worry,dude. People that read PSU everyday already know you're a MS fanboy. Nothing to see here. You must enjoy reading PlayStation sites and being butthurt.

Um why should I be impressed by the number of units shipped? You people will take anything and call it a victory huh? So Sony makes and puts out more systems. Big whoop. Let's say Sega made a system that launched in 2007 and shipped 100 million of them at this point but only actually sell a few hundred thousand of them. Would shipped units matter then?
The accomplishment here is a delusion and honestly im surprised people really buy into it. Can someone please explain what the novelty is here because I must be completely missing it.
This is just like when all those articles came out with Sony bragging that more PSN accounts were opened than XBL accounts when the simple reason for that was the fact that most people made 2 or 3 accounts on one system since psn is free.
I'll take Sony over Microsoft in most situations, however I can do without the delusions of grandeur. -

LOL delusions of grandeur? A tad dramatic dude, it's just a PlayStation related article on a Playstation news site...
You should relax when you see "report" or "rumor" in the title, as it's means it's not yet 100% conclusive...so you don't have to lay an egg in disgust haha. :)

Steviej to the rescue, like usual. lmao Got to admit, he's committed. Whenever there is news that is ruffling M$'s end, you can always be sure to see him pop up here for the defense. XD
Good to see the PS3 overtake M$'s brick.

If articles like these bother you so much, why do you even read them? By the way, when Sony ships products that means retailers are buying them. Do you think Sony ships PS3 units to retailers for free? You people and your stupid, shipped versus sold to consumer numders, are a joke! If the consoles leave the shipping docks their as good as sold in Sony, Microsoft , and Nintendo's eyes. Reporting sold numbers is too appease meatball fanboys that think the numbers don't count because the console isn't in someones living room! Also, if units are shipping to retailers that means there is consumer demand for the product, witch means people are buying them.

ps3 deserves it, awesome awesome system.@ honomaru
Don't know what you're angry about dude, but a lot of the early haters pointed to shipping numbers of the ps3 to show that Sony had "lost" this generation. Now that Sony has made good on its statement that in the long term they'd outsell 360, I think that very well does deserve to be in the news. Remember that consoles only SHIP when retailers are willing to stock them because there is a demand for the console. So numbers shipped, basically are an early look at actual sales, plus it's easier and far more accurate to get the shipment figures of large retail chains than to track their entire sales history (which I'm not even sure is legally allowed). So shipment figures are the only numbers that are indicative of a console's market penetration.

This is amazing when you consider that the 360 had a 12 month head start and that the PS3 launched at an increidible price of 600€ in Europe, so well done sony. Though these numbers don't tell us how many of these consoles are replacements cosoles for PS3 or the XBOX 360 that broke down, personally I'm on my third PS3!

Usually happens anyway I mean PS2 wiped the floor with XBOX 1 after it had a surge of sales in the end

@ 12 and 13 No no im not angry at the article Im just saying that I dont understand what the hullabaloo is all about when it comes to shipment numbers. That's literally all it is...shipment numbers. The amount of units being sent to consumers by the company. I've read many raging fanboy sentiments especially in this latest console generation but not once have I ever heard them say "Oh well 360 is better because they ship more units than ps3". THAT MAKES NO SENSE! Dont any of you see this madness?? I honestly cant be the only one.
(SN: I actually thoroughly read the rest of your comments and now I think I understand. I didnt really give much thought as to the correlation between shipped consoles and demand. I kinda just thought it was "Hey let's ship a bunch of consoles and hope to God they get moved from the shelves." Thanks for explaining, although #12 I dont think it was necessary for you to insult me, I already said before I didnt understand the reason why and that I actually WANTED someone to explain it to me. You should be a bit more tactful with people. It would serve you better than coming at them like a pompous closeminded know-it-all.)@9 yeah...I got carried away. I think im just cranky from being at work all day with no breakfast/lunch 0.o

Ps3 now 2nd place and 1st place for hd consoles with a year of this gen still to go. Microsoft must be very embarrassed when they had a 12month head start in america and 18month head start in Europe and a cheaper console. MS also had sales boost due to RROD which technically but ps3 sales ahead years ago.
Funny seeing the xbox360 fanboy moderators failing this news on n4g yet approving anti ps3 blogs as fast as possible. Site should be ashamed still being xbox's mouth piece after all these years. -
