Today, Square Enix released an extended version of the Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII trailer shown at Jump Festa in Japan. The final game in the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy will be released Fall 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The trailer confirms that Noel from Final Fantasy XIII-2 will be one other character making an appearance in Lightning Returns. Likewise, you may notice in the battle segments of the trailer that Lightning has different outfits. At a preview event yesterday, producer Yoshinori Kitase revealed that by changing her clothes, players will have access to different combat styles.

A large part of the story is set in Luxeria, a city ruled by strict religion. Players will face a 13-day countdown until the end of the world that serves as a time limit and causes the game's environment to change. Lightning will be the game's only playable protagonist, allowing for more action-based, active battles and less party management.

It's hard to tell if Lightning Returns is a step in the right direction for the franchise, but it certainly is different from the previous games in the series. In the comments below, let us know your thoughts on how her latest adventure is shaping up.

I really don't know why, but I keep getting excited for each new Final Fantasy title. Even though XIII-2 is a bit unorthodox, I still dig it a great deal, and the ideas behind this one are pretty interesting. Hopefully, the costume switching mimics, but not completely, the class system from FF X-2.

You say it won't have party management, as if any of the other ffxiii entries had some or any micro management at all for that matter.., just more dumbing gaming down to the lowest common denominator eh. I gave xiii-2 a chance, but SE can KMA on this one. I'll stick to the remakes and hdclassics, I'm done with these new games.
