DMC Old Dante DLC is a contradiction, not middle ground

The Devil May Cry series dried up for me when Nero showed up. The fourth game turned into DMC2-2, especially when I was abruptly thrown into Dante's complex combat system after spending most of the game with Nero. Thanks to Ninja Theory, the DMC franchise is now in good hands, but the latest move to alleviate tension with old, faithful fans by including downloadable content of Old Dante skins is leaving the new fans wondering, "Why make the cool new Dante look like a poser version of the old one?"

It's been a long time coming where a gaming series such as Devil May Cry should receive a hefty reboot, and Ninja Theory took it upon itself to reestablish the title in a more modern, Western vision. The initial announcement trailer shocked me in an incredibly negative way, portraying the teeny-bopping angst of a cliche under-twenty-year-old guy trying to prove something. What took place through the rest of the trailers leading up to launch was an opinion shift from rage to empathy, empathy to appreciation, and appreciation to excitement. The final push was the playable demo, which showcased the perfect blend of former titles from NT with the camera style featured in Enslaved and a weapon system greatly influenced by Heavenly Sword and the original DMC series, that left me with a strong desire to own this reboot.

The story depicted references to the original content in honorable fashion throughout, which is more than enough for any fan without being given the same thing over and over. This respectable middle ground should be good enough, because the rest of the game is great, featuring a superb combat system and a story that, in the context of action games, delivers in a big way. However, NT is now bringing out playable skins of old Dante. This is a major contradiction of terms, considering the developer recently stood its ground on the new direction it has intended to take all along; NT has even received death threats on the matter.

In light of all this, why would NT take the time to develop a false representation of the original protagonist when the game itself pays enough homage to it already? Sales could be an answer. Certainly, there are many fans who would be willing to purchase both the game and the DLC in order to emulate an experience similar to the old ways, but this brings up the modern-day issue with DLC: if it launches so quickly after launch, why not include it in the retail version? This DLC is purely for aesthetics, where even the first DLC for Mass Effect 3 was for adding gameplay.

The need for sales is not validation by tricking gamers into buying this reboot. Even if this game is a slow burner, it'll come around. The new content is great, NT, and the stubborn fans will come around, simply because this DMC has been so well constructed in the elongated shadow of its former self. This title deserves its limelight and the old games should be left where they lie: next to the other great HD collections.

I loved the black haired Dante, and honestly would've loved if NT kept it that way, but the DLC being launched so early does make it seem like it should've been in game content.

Agreed Jordan SV, but you know as well as I do that  the publisher knew there would be people out there that would pay for it.

I agree with this completely. After beating the game I had realized that I didn't even want to play as Dante with white hair, because it didn't really fit lol. Especially after that whole wig scene, adding white hair kinda defeated that whole purpose.

It's pretty pathetic to me how impressionable the fanboys are. This is like the "Raiden Incident" (Metal Gear Solid 2) all over again.
    1. It is revealed that the developer changed the protagonist from one thing to another.
    2. Everyone whines and moans about the changes.
    3. When the character "proves themselves" even slightly, everyone hops from one bandwagon to the next. "Pft I never REALLY hated him that much to begin with."

In Raiden's case, the hypocrites saw him in MGS4 and all of a sudden they wanted him to have his own game (which will suck btw).

In Dante's case, the hypocrites actually PLAYED the GAME (gasp! It's actually possible to base your judgment on something OTHER than a first impression? WOW!) and now they dont even WANT the old Dante skins?

I really think when these games come out and reveal changes within a series, you guys should really absolve from becoming part of the "They changed it, now it sucks" trope, shut up and just wait until you actually get the chance to legitimately validate your opinion.

And the saddest thing, the absolutely saddest part of all this, is that these fools are the majority of gamers (which means its where most of the money is) so they get to dictate and distort (for better or worse) the artistic direction of a game long before it even releases.

The fact that the developer chose to remain strong with their "artistic vision" (a profanity filled cliche-fest) in the face of fan backlash at first almost seemed impressive. Now that their excuse for a Devil May Cry game is tanking, they've just thrown it all away. Cute.

@5 I agree. Personally, I disliked the game but I came to my conclusion after having PLAYED it.

If you're suggesting that the end result turned out to be a hackneyed piece of junk because of their refusal to submit to all the backlash (which btw it is likely they did submit if you consider the time they came out and said the game was to take place in a non canon parallel universe) then you're basically saying that gamers are the ones who should ultimately have the final say in what happens to a story. Horrible.

Can you imagine if at some point developers actually start holding votes on things like "what ending do you want?". Gamers would have to pay for votes but could vote as many times as they like. That way the devs always appeal to the majority AND get more money at the same time.

Remember when the DC comics guy held a vote for readers to decide if the Jason Todd Robin should die and that one guy spammed the votes which resulted in Todd's death?

    Yeah...that.

The fact is DMC 1 is the best DMC ever, capcom will never reach the level of awesomeness from DMC 1 ever again... I love DMC but after a while when i notice the games are coming bad game and avarage game, good game, i change to god of war, capcom love to destroy their games like they did with Resident evil(my favorites games) after Resident evil 4 the series died completly. What made Resident evil a loved game for many people are missed in the past 2 3 games, i mean the game is not anymore what use to. DMC is exacly the same thing but even worst, what DMC 1 was! will never come ever again, because capcom change the game path, this last DMC is good, awesome story i admit that, but lacks in the essencials things. What kinda dante is that? dante isnt so coky like pass games, dark atmosfare is completly gonne now looks happy and colourful really?! the game design is cool dont get me wrong, its awesome actually but that isnt Devil May cry Looks like a game for gothic people!, dante movements arent so awesome like used to be, devil trigger i dont even coment. This rebirth is good as DMC 4 not imprissive, and not bad lets be serious! Is that kinda of game you give a 8 or something... isnt a game for you give 10 or 9.

I'm sorry, but after Game informer gave this game a 9 out of 10, they lost almost all credibility as far as I'm concerned. I think it was a decent attempt at something new, but as #7 just stated, Devil May Cry will never be as brilliant as it was with the first one (In my case add the 3rd one as well). I loved the ideas and focus on much of the story that reflects the problems of our society today, but in terms of the way it was delivered, was dreadful. I would give it a 7.5, no more than that.

fucking fanboyz, hate everything that isnt exactly the same, this is why no one should ever complain about CALL OF DUTY. I due think this game is great having played it, and it is a 9/10 even on this website. and having just played dmc again last week i can tell you for a fact that you cant compare games of older generations to newer ones. many of you are seeing the old game through rose colored glasses, seriously. and as for the people who are constantly complaining about the new game should go fuckthemselves because obviously u guys are fucking idiots

I was more interested in the old Dante being in this Game, then this New Dante was...

I mean, this New Dante looks nothing like the old Dante...

You can't really complain with him being Younger, & all, but the fact hes not really the same...

Just makes me not wanna play it... I tried the Demo, & it's just not the same anymore, I can't Play it...

However, this Color Swap, I think was a good idea, if it was a totally different Hairstyle that is...
I'd rather have the old style Back in Black, then just simply making his Hair White...

Sounds a bit cheesy & under developed if you asked me...

Hes got the Jacket, the Weapons, & Powers, but hes just not Dante...

I would seriously not pay for a Color Swap, btw... Paying to Simply have White Hair is like a waste of money spent, !@_@!

    Of corse thats just me...

Plus, I dun mind him being thinner now, but I think hes a bit way too Thin... lOl... No?

Correction, it's not a Color Swap, it's just his old Costume & Hair... From when he was older...
My bad, but it would of been nice if they made it Black instead of White, though...

To symbolize that hes now Younger, but oh, well...

The Constant Frames of Video Switching him back to his Original Self, though is kinda of annoying...

Should of Edited the Video as well... oO
