Analyst: GTA V could launch on PS4, Xbox 720

Doug Creutz, an analyst with Cowen & Company, has suggested that Grand Theft Auto V may be released on next-generation consoles in wake of the crime romp’s recent delay.

Writing in a research note (via CVG), Creutz offered that GTA V’s sales may take a hit on current systems due to its release being in close proximity to the anticipated launch of Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles.

"In and of itself, the delay of the game from FQ1 to FQ2 would not normally mean any significant change to expected FY14 financial results," said the analyst.

"However there is an issue in that we expect the next generation of Xbox and/or PlayStation consoles to launch in the December quarter. We think the closer proximity of GTA V to the next cycle could, at the margin, impact lifetime sales of the title, though we believe that a title of GTA's stature will still be a major seller regardless.”

"We think there also could be some impact on the legs of likely GTA V downloadable content as the next-gen installed base increases through 2014. However, we suspect Take-Two may have plans to eventually publish GTA V on the next set of consoles in some form to offset this."

GTA V was originally scheduled to ship in spring 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360, though Rockstar yesterday announced it would instead be released worldwide on September 17.

As for the next batch of hardware, both Sony and Microsoft are expected to reveal new platforms this year, with PS4 rumored to show its face as early as February 20. Both systems are expected to launch in late 2013.

No, thuis will come out on current gen because there is more potentiel in sales figures on current consoles than next-gen, but I won't exclude a port to next-gen in 2014. Too bad we'll have to wait wait 5/6 months longer but I guess this push back is necessary to give us a GTA V that we deserve and closser to perfection.

Does anyone realize that the PS4 wont launch that early... yeah, they might announce it this year, but it wont come out for another 2 years. Thats what happend with the PS3. They announced it in like 2004, but it didnt come out until 2006.

@4 Let's hope not, the PS3 is seriously due for an upgrade. And no more of this, "We haven't even begun to unlock the potential of the PS3"

Yes you have, when It doesn't take me 5 seconds for the XMB to load when I hit the PS button then I'll be happy. Thankfully according to rumors the PS4 will have 4-8GB of Ram, which is 8-16 X more than what we have now.

This will be the PS3's 7th year, with 3 remaining years in the 10 year life cycle. So I believe the rumors are right and it is launching sometime this year.
