PS4 easier to develop for than 'tough PS3,' says Codemasters

Codemasters has admitted PlayStation 4’s architecture has been easier to get to grips with than its predecessor.

PS3 was notorious among developers for being a complicated piece of kit to work with during its early days. However, it seems this won’t be repeated with PS4.

“The general consensus amongst our guys is the architecture is a little easier to get our heads around”, Codemasters’ Clive Moody told EDGE. “It’s no secret that PS3 was tough, very, very, bespoke architecture.

“It was something that took us and a lot of developers a lot of time really to just understand how to squeeze the best out of it. I think from the off with PS4 architecture it’s going to be easier to get results.

“The last thing we want as developers is stuff in the way of producing and creating experiences so that’s a massive plus.”

Codemasters is currently chiselling away on GRID 2 for current-generation formats. PS4 was revealed last Wednesday at the PlayStation Meeting, and will launch alongside titles such as Killzone: Shadow Fall in holiday 2013.

Stay tuned.

the "lesser ports" on PS3 was not due to programming difficulties, but to Microsoft having developers "not do a better version" for PS3 or they'd have legal problems or less money as payoff

Its kind of obvious that it would be, since the CBE isn't present this time around. We shouldn't hear any complaining about development.

@2 and because of that it's going to cripple the heck out of microsoft.  If more people flock to the PS4, Microsoft is going to have to change their stance and stop causing other developers to jump through hoops.

     @ 2 &4

The article makes it quite clear aboutt the PS3 being notorious.

Here's a though, why don't you actually listen to a developer:

    http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/26/wheelman-dev-calls-ps3-a-pain-in-the-ass-xbox-a-dumb-pc/

"Appearing on the This Xbox Life podcast, Shaun Himmerick was questioned on developing for 360 and PS3, to which he responded, "The politically incorrect answer is that the PS3 is a huge pain in the a$s. Anyone making a game, if you're going to make it for both, just lead on the PS3 because if it works on the PS3, it'll work on 360."

"We had to play catch up on the PS3 because of the memory constraints and how it renders -- how it processes is just different. And it's harder on the PS3," Himmerick continued. "The Xbox is just like a dumb PC, which is great because it's easier to build a game on a PC."

I went to a GameStop yesterday (first mistake), the guy said he didn't think Sony "learned from their mistakes". I think the developers (people who get it) disagree and this article basically proves as much. The PS3 ended up doing well even with all of the complaining early on so imagine the difference now. Good job Sony, keep it up. Now don't disappoint the consumer.

I Don't Know Why But I Don't Like The Way This Developer Says A Little Bit Which He Really Could Mean A Little Bit Easy It's Probably Nothing But I Would Hate To Have A Few More Bethesda's On Our Hands I Really Dont Want To Hear Excuses Next-Gen

@6- I know what your saying. Most of the guys who work at the Gamestops think they know everything about gaming just because they work at a gaming retail store. Also, its funny that some them say Sony hasn't learned from their mistakes, when M$ made a ton of them themselves, but nobody there hits on them for it, they must like failures.

Its a bias world we play in. lol =)

Not exactly mind blowing news. It's an x86 based processor. It's the most well known and taught archetecture on the planet. If the PS4 was only 1% easier to developer for then the PS3, that statement would still be true.

They helped dump a billion dollars into the Cell's developement and couldn't be bothered to keep it's archetecture around for at least one more console generation. It's a stinging  indictment of the failure of the Cell project. It will only be used by IBM in niche computer applications.
