The PlayStation 4’s accelerated processing unit (APU) is the most powerful of its kind ever produced by AMD, the hardware giant has said.
PS4’s specs were revealed in detail during the PlayStation Meeting last week, where it was confirmed the machine would boast 8GB memory and custom AMD Radeon GPU.
“We have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market,” said AMD’s global business manager, John Taylor.
“It is by far the most powerful APU we have built to date.”
“None that will quite be to that level of sheer number of cores, sheer number of teraflops,” he explained.
Yesterday it was reported that the PS4’s CPU will clock in at 2 GHz, with development kits up to this point having been scaled down to 1.6 GHz.
PS4 will be released this holiday season.

Thats really cool. Now to wait and see what this thing can dish out in gameplay.

To be fair APU's where never bout speed but being power effcient. Building faster versions where always an eventuality.
Still good to see.

And now the inevitable question comes: does this mean XBOX's Next APU will be so much weaker than PS4's? And how will MS react to AMD giving such news? Basically shi***ng on MS's next console that they also deliver an APU for...

This statement would imply the Xbox 720's APU isn't quite as powerful.
APUs will always be a low cost solution for those on a budget. My laptiop I'm using is a dual core A6-4400M APU, but I bought a AMD Radeon HD 7670M card since the APU's GPU just barely gets the job done in gaming.
APUs will always be for people on a budget for gaming. Serious gamers will either steer clear of them for the i7s or FX chips of the world or will make sure they disable it's GPU and use a beefy GPU card instead.
@3 It's a design choice for Microsoft. If they wanted the best chip out there, they have the money to get it. they have more cash on hand then Sony does right now. This design choice was because of Kinect. It sold a boatload so far on 360 with around 24 mill. They want to include that for everyone now and made it better on top of that. I still think in most cases the consoles will be within range of each other. It comes down more to devs efforts then a tech pissing contest.

This is good news, as it put sony ahead again, LOL.
M$ is riding everything on kinect which is fine if your looking to get a bigger share of nintendo's market.
but sony is in it for the core gamer which M$ is going to lose a big share in if they decide that raw power is not as important as including a more expensive kinect camera.

Thats all said and done but can AMD have the chips ready for demand when the PS4 is launched they had issues in the past getting out there PC GPU's because of the foundary labs not being able to chuck out the right amount to meet demand

@GreatSpaceKoaster Considering the flood of "amazing" kinect content I'm not convinced. Most of the best things related to the Kinect's existence didnt even involve an xbox. That said, I agree there's nothing stopping MS from building the almost exact same system or simply trying to one up the PS4 in a different area. The 360 was already less powerful than the PS3 from a technical stand point, the place where it beat them was in the software by making exclusive deals left and right. So sony might have an awesome hardware set up but they also need to insure the content will be there, developers might prefer them but it's still necessary to make sure the contracts get signed ASAP.
