Hideo Kojima on PS4: features don't make the platform, it needs games

Speaking to EDGE magazine, famed game director Hideo Kojima has described his feelings on PlayStation 4 and Sony's PS4 reveal at last month's PlayStation Meeting.
While Kojima was apparently too busy to watch the livestream, he was impressed by Sony's offerings. "First of all, I think that’s great, but it’s nothing special; you could see it coming," he said. "It’s the logical evolution of the platform and I think it has to head in that direction, hearing what [Edge described] is not surprising."
While these remarks come off as unimpressed, Kojima was quick to clarify. "Honestly, I think all of that is good and great. Social aspects, the multidevice direction: that’s correct, that’s the way to go. But just because it has these features doesn’t mean it’s going to be a success." According to Kojima, PS4 will live or die by its lineup of games, and Lead System Architect Mark Cerny has been reluctant to share details with the Metal Gear mastermind. "What will really determine whether or not it sells is what titles will be available for the platform. And unfortunately, even though I am friends with Mark Cerny, he’s never told me what other studios are working on. I even ate a meal with him recently and he didn’t tell me anything."
The full interview with Kojima will be published in EDGE's upcoming March 14 issue. Sound off in the comments if you agree (or disagree) with Kojima's sentiments, and stay glued to PSU.com for all things PS4.

And I don't care about your junky opinion. Go create good games and improve them not just keep going forwar or backward with useless stories and titles as Capcom does.

He, just like most of JP devs, was a let down this generation. Mgs4 was cool but he has a lot of making up to do.

Gotta agree with him, it's the games that matter. But I have thing feeling that even though we've only seen 4 first party games for ps4, a lot more will pop up for the launch, possibly with a quality level of the Vita launch or even better, can't wait for e3!

I'd rather think it as more like a bro-lunch than a man-date, leaves a better image in the head at least :-D

I respect Kojima but I don't share his opinion. I think the ps4 is awesome and is receiving a lot of support from developers. Kojima you don't work for Sony so Mark Cerny doesn't need to share that kind of information with you.

Kojima, I love you, but your opinion is not new, you could see it coming. Every console's life depends on its games. This is not old news. Stop sharing opinions and having dinner and get to making MGS5 for whatever console you're making it for. If you want the PS4 to succeed, help it by releasing MGS5 as a launch title. Mhmm.

Wow. at least SOMEONE understands. This is how I always felt about consoles. It doesnt matter what kind of superpowers they have, cuz at the end of the day, we are all playing the games. I really could care less about all the social stuff. Thats what my frikkin computer is for

Sony doesn't have to tell Kojima jack. Sony understands what they need to accomplish with the PS4, and what they need it to do when it comes to features and especially games. Sony doesn't have 12 developing studios of their own for s.h.i.ts N giggles. I love Kojimas work, but he has been absent most of this gen, so I have lost a lot of interest in what he is doing, specially when he wants to take the Metal Gear name, and make it multiplatform, when its the Playstation brand that made the Metal Gear series (now a franchise) successful in the first place. Pesonally, I can care less what this fool thinks any further.
Moving on...........

Kojima does not develop games for the Wii or the Wii U so do I need to say anthing more? Point noted that a ganing platfom is nothing without compelling ganes to play, however the AAA games in the industry are always find the best gaming platforms. Has Kojina has forgotten what gaming consoles have propelled his career and the Metal Gear frenchise?

GAMES sell the MACHINE. NOT the OTHER WAY AROUND.
Kojima is absolutely correct and anyone that bought a console on the first day this generation knows it. If you don;t have entertaining experiences for people to buy it won;t matter if the machine can cure cancer, it's simply not doing what you bought it to do. All the extra features are nice, internet surfing, communicating with friends, multimedia capabilities etc these are all nice conviences that add a nice touch but at the end of the day you want a game console to deliver you games.
