Avalanche: PS4 will 'out-power PCs for next few years'

The developer behind the Just Cause series has heaped praise on Sony’s decision to include 8GB RAM in the PlayStation 4.
Speaking during an interview with GamingBolt, Avalanche Studios’ chief technical officer, Linus Bloomberg, said that PS4’s meaty innards will give it the edge over PCs for years to come.
“The consoles desperately need a boost since having been oveortaken in terms of performance by PCs several years ago, and also losing market share to mobile platforms,” he said.
“I’m glad Sony decided to go with 8GB RAM because it means that the PS4 will out-power most PCs for years to come.”
Bloomberg also praised the social connectivity of Sony’s next-generation console, and says this functionality is ‘perfect’ for the type of games Avalanche makes.
“The PS4 will not only be a very powerful gaming machine from a hardware perspective, but it will also be a social tool and integrated marketplace more akin to the successful mobile devices,” said Bloomberg.
“It’s the best of all worlds in a way; great performance for demanding high-end gaming, good social ecosystem and connectivity, and integrated business marketplace.
“For Avalanche Studios as an open-world games developer this is super exciting and opens up many new opportunities. It’s a perfect fit for the types of games we do, and we are confident that we’ll bring open-world gaming to a whole new level because of it.”
PS4 is due out in holiday 2013.

You can't attack the PC at all. Just wait 5 months after the PS4 will be released. The PC will have something better and PS4 will be behind. The problem is with the consoles. You can't upgrade them but PC you could.

Oh boy, this is what I really hate about the launch of new console generations. The stupid and oft misquoted statements that game developers, publishers and analysts make, and then the ill-informed none sense that articles like this produce. 8GB of RAM, what type of RAM. What CPU are you using, OS, motherboard etc. What the OS overheads of a PC compared to those of a Console. How optimized is the code for the game you are playing to your PC set up. PC's are not a stable platform, they're bespoke, and that is what makes them weird and wonderful. They are however, thoroughly inefficient systems. The model most PC Rigs are built around is throw enough power at it to overwhelm the problem and most of that power, or good chunks of it will go to waste. In a raw willy waving theoretical specs race I'd fully expect a £1000 PC to wipe the floor with £300 consoles. However, it's never that easy when it comes to the end performance and what you see on screen. Truth is consoles do squeeze more out of their available components than PC's do. But give it 12 months and the available components for PCs will be far better than they are now. What will be interesting is seeing how this current generation of consoles manages to keep pace with the PC development curve and mitigates the gap that will inevitably appear.

The PC is Already more powerful then PS4 take a look at the new Nvidia Card :)

But still, that doesn’t mean the best looking games will be on PC, is up to the Developers to make that happen.
For example, did any of you play the first Crysis on PC? And do any of you know when Crysis came out on PC? it was released in November 2007 that's one year afterPS3 lunch, and till now there's no game on any console, not even the new kill zone on PS4 will get close to the graphics of Crysis on PC 6 years ago, but we needed lots$$ to get it running on hi res and smooth.

The PS4 will out do memory amount when it comes to gpu's, since Nvidias top of the line gpu's only tops out at 6GB of GDDR. But when your talking gpu performance itself......no. The PS4s gpu is between the 7850-7870 series, when pc's are using 7970 series already. A lot of gaming pc's cpu's are overclocked also, where the PS4s is not. Im not sure where this guy is going with his comments, but it won't take very long for pc hardware to skyrocket even further from where their at now. The PS4 is going to be like a mild gaming pc, with super fast memory feeding it by the time is shows its face at the end of this year, kind of look at it like that. =)

I agree PermanentlyAngry, most pcs are running on ddr3 not ddr5, & the optimization of games for consoles is a huge factor, btw sony1978 the titan cost about $999 by itself, so theres no logic in comparing it with a $500 console. Not to say ps4 will out perform a high end pc, but as far as bang for your buck its a great value.

Yeah, of course a super expensive PC will be able to outperform it, but for $450 I doubt a PC around the same price range can keep up with the PS4 for a while. Plus the PS4 has the advantage of being optimized a lot more, especially with exclusives, because it doesn't have to run a ton of stuff in the background like PC does. I mean just look at the graphics were still getting with the PS3 on 6 year old hardware. The graphics on God Of War Ascension and The Last of Us look pretty damn good to me.

@4
Your PC doesn't have DDR5, does it? PS4 uses GDDR5 for both system and GPU ;) And you better believe the stuff it has will be used better than the stuff inside your PC. Much less overhead and things running in the background with consoles(and every console is the same - optimisation).
@6 The new Killzone looks much better than Crysis. Way more detail. If you don't think the PS4 could run Crysis at MAX(with mods) then you're just being silly. A console that's 2X-3x the PS3 should run that pretty well. PS4 is much beyond that.
@9 So looking forward to The Last of Us! :) Ascention does indeed look great, and I may get it, along with the PSP HD collection(got the others). People may whine, but a GoW game on the PS4 could be such a treat...
Will take much more expensive PCs to out-do the PS4. -

I think everyone understands that PCs will always have the potential to be stronger than consoles but you also have to factor in price. Consoles are built to be game playing work horses while PCs are saddled with opperating systems that are weighty and hog resources, they do way more with less than a PC. The PS3 and 360 ran the sames games that 6GB PCs ran so it's not out of the relm of possibility that a PC using an equivolent amount of power to out pace a consoles would cost twice as much, which makes it a less consumer friendly choice.

PC's will out power PS4 but at what price? plus you don't get games like Uncharted, KillZone, God of War, WipeOut etc
