Thief: The Dark Project Remastered Coming To PS5, PS4 This Winter From Nightdive Studios

Looking Glass Studios’ classic 1998 title Thief: The Dark Project is getting the Nightdive Studios treatment this winter, with Thief: The Dark Project Remastered currently in development for PS5, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.

Speaking in a press release, Stephen Kick, CEO if Nightdive Studios, commented, “Thief didn’t just introduce stealth mechanics, it defined them. With this remaster, we’ve preserved the tension and intelligence of the original while enhancing it for modern players, ensuring that its legacy continues to influence how stealth games are played today.”

Meanwhile, Patrice Baig, General Manager of Eidos Montreal, added, “Few games have had an impact as enduring as Thief. It set a standard for immersion and atmospheric storytelling that still resonates today. This remaster ensures a new generation can experience what made it so influential, and we’re proud to see it treated with such care.”

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered sees players stepping into the shoes of an orphan named Garret, who is rescued from the streets by a secretive ancient audience known as the Keepers. He’s then trained to become a Master Thief, but reaching adulthood rebels and leaves the order, thus putting him on a path of stealing from the wealthy for personal gain. Thief: The Dark Project is known for its impressive NPC AI system, which uses a dynamic visibility system that allows NPCs to adapt to any sound you make, investigating and even raising the alarm.

Players are encountered to stick to the shadows, where light and sound plays a major role in the core gameplay as you use fire arrows to extinguish torches and moss arrows to dampen loud surfaces. Meanwhile, Garret’s training as a Master Thief ensures he is perfectly at home in the art of stealth combat, allowing him to incapacitate enemies from behind or use arrows for ranged combat. Garret can also make use of other tools of the trade, including lock picks, remote cameras, and rope arrows to allow him to reach new locations.

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered also introduces a wealth of quality-of-life improvements, including updated graphic textures and models, as well as polishing up cut scenes and animations. In addition, the UI has been overhauled, with weapon and item wheels now included alongside a mission selector.

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is due out this winter for PS5, PS4, PC, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
