Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert has announced his departure from Double Fine.
Gilbert joined the studio last year to work on his latest project, The Cave, which was released as a downloadable title in January.
However, writing on his Grumpy Gamer blog, Gilbert said: “It’s time for me to move on from Double Fine and plot my next move.”
“So many games left to be designed.”
The games designer had nothing but good things to say about Tim Schafer’s studio though, adding: “I want to thank all the amazing people at Double Fine for all their hard work on The Cave.
“It was a true pleasure to work with every one of them over the past two years. So much fun. I will miss them all. And of course to Tim for creating the opportunity to come there and make The Cave.”
Gilbert is teaming up with DeathSpank co-creator Clayton Kauzlaric for his next project, the iOS game ‘Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG.’ Yes, that really is its name.

What a shame, I had hoped they would continue working together- from the outside it seemed a perfect match. Even worst is another amazing and storied dev (that imho should be creating full fledged games) moving into ios development. We'll miss you on our consoles Mr. Gilbert; atleast until we get a port- Fingers Crossed...
