Sony confirms PS4 was the U.K.’s best-selling console in 2013

MCV reports that the PlayStation 4 triumphed as the best-selling video games console in the U.K. last year.

Sony’s next-generation home console sold over 530,000 units in the country in 2013, topping its rivals in the process. The feat is even more impressive considering PS4 was only available from November 29 in the U.K.

Nintendo 3DS is the only system that managed to outsell the new system overall, but in terms of home consoles (i.e., not counting handheld platforms) the PS4 took pole position.

Apparently it was a close call between Sony’s machine and the Xbox 360, with PS4 surpassing its last-gen rival in the final weeks of 2013.

Fergal Gara, PlayStation U.K.’s Managing Director, commented: “We are delighted with the very strong sales of PS4 to date.

"Since we unveiled the console, gamers have shown huge interest in the PS4. Our focus now is rebuilding stock levels so those have not been able to get a PS4 can finally experience the next-gen. I’d like to thank the gamers, our retail and publishing partners who played a big part in making this success possible."

PS4 has sold 4.2 million hardware units to date since its launch on November 15 in the U.S.
