The planned movie adaptation of Naughty Dog’s multi-million selling Uncharted video game series will commence filming in early 2015.
Seth Gordon, who is attached to direct the action-adventure flick, confirmed the news during a chat with Zap2it.
Of course, this is despite the fact an actor has yet to be cast in the role of Nathan Drake, the wise-cracking treasure hunter who players control in the PlayStation-exclusive franchise.
"It’s going to honour the mythology of the game," said Gordon, "but I would say honour some of the most interesting stuff from the first one and build from there. There’s some stuff that isn’t in the game."
"I love the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game, and we aspire to that — but don’t want to tell the exact same story, of course — so something that doesn’t break the rules of what it did but expands. Because I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don’t want to just see the same story told. You want extra shades."
Previously, David O’ Russell was to helm the Uncharted, although his direction would have taken the movie in a significantly different direction from the games. He also had the muscle-bound Mark Wahlberg lined up to portray Drake, who would have belonged to a mobster-style family of fortune seekers.
Thankfully that idea fell through, and Gordon is keen on making sure whoever places Drake is a top-notch talent — not that we had anything against Wahlberg, mind, but like many fans, we rather liked the idea of Nathan Fillion.
"That’s number one," he continued, "and then if it’s someone who has an actual jaw, that’s even better. The game is so well done that you need it to live up to that. There’s no way we’d do the inverse of that where it’s somebody famous who can’t [act]."
The next chapter in the Uncharted franchise, subtitled A Thief’s End, is currently in development exclusively for PS4.
