Ken Kutaragi to receive GDC Lifetime Achievement Award

The Game Developers Choice Awards will present Ken Kutaragi with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2014 Game Developers Conference according to their blog.

Kutaragi was the lead engineer for Sony’s PlayStation console and is also known as the “Father of the PlayStation.” Under his guidance, the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 were two of the best-selling video game consoles of all time.

He was promoted to Deputy Executive President and served in that position from 2003 to 2006. He oversaw the launch of the PlayStation 3 during that time, too. Kutaragi was most recently Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Honorary Chairman. He now serves as president and CEO of Cyber AI Entertainment Inc.

"The PlayStation has become a household name, representing some of the biggest and best gaming experiences of all time. Its success and longevity is a reflection of the insight, craft, technical prowess and hard work of the team led by Kutaragi-san, the father of the PlayStation," said Meggan Scavio, General Manager of all GDC events.

Mark Cerny, lead architect of the PS4 and a member of the GDC Awards Advisory Committee, will present the award to Kutaragi.

The ceremony takes place March 19, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. PT during GDC 2014 in San Francisco.

It is a well-deserved honor for one of the most influential people in video games.
