Electronic Arts has confirmed that the servers for 50 of its online-enabled games will be shut down on June 30, 2014.
The decision has come after the multiplayer gaming platform GameSpy, which hosts the online services for many EA titles and other games, such as Red Dead Redemption, Borderlands and Grand Theft Auto IV, is closing down its servers on May 31, 2014.
Among the most popular games to face the axe online are Bulletstorm, Battlefield 2 and Crysis 2. The closure of GameSpy has caused a number of developers, including Mortal Kombat 9’s NetherRealm Studios, to look at other ways to provide online functionality. EA has also investigating ways in which to start up the servers again on some of these games, but no plans have yet been announced.
GameSpy owner Glu Mobile now plans to concentrate its efforts on its own services to mobile platforms.
