AMD Mark Cerny News PlayStation 6 PS6 Sony

The PS6 Is Still Likely Years Off Despite The Increase In Talk Of Next-Gen Consoles

PlayStation hardware architect Mark Cerny has made it clear that the PS6 is still years off despite the fact Sony has been a little more open in taking about its next-generation console plans, which of course includes a collaboration with AMD with Project Amethyst.

Speaking with Tom’s Guide, Cerny made it clear that he’s working with a multi-year time frame, despite the fact AMD is moving fast in it own right.

AMD is moving extremely quickly. What I’m trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my time-frame is multi-year here.

So, when can we actually expect the PS6? Well, if we’re looking at the past few hardware cycles, a new PlayStation system is usually released every seven years. So, with that in mind, Sony’s next-generation console could arrive in 2027. However, former Sony indie boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that it ‘feels right‘ if the PS6 were to launch in 2028, and there’s still the chance that Sony may want to keep the PS5 around a little longer and therefore wait until after 2027 to release its successor.

In related news, the PS6 is also heavily rumoured to be launching alongside a new handheld from Sony, which is supposedly going to make use of shader binary compatibility, ensuring it can play PS5 games without the need from developer tinkering.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cerny revealed that the PS5 Pro will receive a new update in 2026 that will replace PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) with a solution that is partially derived from AMD’s FSR 4.
