Hackers threatening to bring PSN offline this Christmas

Hacker group Phantom Squad have threatened to pull PlayStation Network offline during the Christmas holiday period.

This may not be a case of all talk and no action, as the group previously launched a ddos attack on Xbox Live earlier this week, and it would seem that Sony’s flagship online service is next in line.

PS4 owners will no doubt recall last year’s issues with PSN, after hackers Lizard Squad attacked disrupted the service for a number of days last Christmas. Eventually, justice was served after a number of arrests were made in the U.K. earlier this year. Sony later apologised for the downtime and offered compensation for users, although fortunately it wasn’t anywhere near as major as the PSN downtime of spring 2011.

Whether or not Phantom Squad goes ahead with its threat is anyone’s guess, although best get those single-player titles out just in case you find yourself unable to log-in to PSN over the holidays. Needless to say, we sincerely hope that Sony is able to defend against such attacks over Christmas and moving into the New Year.
