Report: PS4 sales hit nearly 40 million at end of 2015, PS Vita at 10 million

According to a new study conducted by EEDAR, global sales of PlayStation 4 hit approximately 38 million at the end of 2015, while PlayStation Vita stood at 10 million.

The report also reveals that Sony’s current-generation console is beating Xbox One by quite a margin, with Microsoft’s machine reaching 20 million units sold in the same time frame.

Obviously this is a few months old now, although it’s a good indicator of how the hardware war has progressed since both systems launched in November 2013.

Unsurprisingly, both consoles have comfortably outsold the Nintendo Wii U, which hit 12.5 million units by the end of last year. It also suggests that PS3 has the edge in worldwide sales over Xbox 360, although both systems are no longer selling as strongly as they one did.

Just recently, World of Tanks developer War Gaming predicted that the PS4 will hit 69 million units sold by 2019.

Sony has a major year ahead of it with the likes of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Ratchet & Clank, No Man’s Sky, Gran Turismo and The Last Guardian all hitting PS4 as exclusive titles.

In addition, the format holder will also release the virtual reality headset, PlayStation VR, in October of this year, priced at $399/£349.
