[UPDATE] Game Informer has been in touch with Ubisoft PR and they’ve confirmed that the post is merely a throwback post and is not teasing anything.
[ORIGINAL] French publisher Ubisoft has today sent the internet into sleuth mode with a cryptic Far Cry 3-related tease on both its official Facebook and Instagram accounts.
With an image of the famous tropical island from the game accompanied with the line ”an island we never truly left”, it’s not clear whether a possible forthcoming announcement could be a sequel, prequel, or indeed remaster of what many consider to be the definitive entry in the Far Cry series.
Last September, the multinational publisher – who’s in the midst of a hostile takeover by conglomerate Vivendi – suggested that there wouldn’t necessarily be a mainline entry in the Far Cry series releasing in 2017, possibly due in part to franchise or indeed open-world fatigue that’s befallen the Assassin’s Creed series presently.
And though Far Cry Primal did manage to exceed the commercial expectation set forth by Ubisoft last year, it’s safe to say that critical reception was a little more underwhelming, with multiple references to the game’s repetitive design and flat story as the main points of contention. Even so, Far Cry 3 is a fan-favourite in the series and shipped a mammoth 10 million units (as of October 30, 2014) so there’s certainly an audience there if Ubisoft was to possibly remaster the game for release around its fifth anniversary – shoring up its bottom line a little before full production on begins on a fully-fledged Far Cry 5.
As ever, stay tuned to PSU for any developments regarding Ubisoft’s plan for the Far Cry series as is safe to say they’re not anywhere near done with it yet.
