NPD U.S. hardware figures for the month of January 2009 reveal that Sony’s PlayStation 3 console has once again been pipped to the post by the Xbox 360, with Nintendo steaming ahead of the pack for yet another month running.
Despite shifting an impressive 203,000 units last month, Sony’s black behemoth failed to outpace Microsoft’s machine, which outsold its leading rival by over 100,000 units.
Elsewhere, PlayStation Portable sold through 172,000, while the PlayStation 2 managed 101,000 units during the same period. Furthermore, Sony confirmed that PSP has now sold a staggering 50 million units worldwide since its launch in 2004.
Needless to say, we expect February’s NPD to showcase a significant spike in overall PS3 sales on the back of Guerrilla Games’ hotly anticipated FPS, Killzone 2.
