Crytek: CryEngine 3 "will run slightly better" on PS3

In an interview with IGN, Crytek President and CEO Cevat Yerli stated that CryEngine 3 "will run slightly better" on the PlayStation 3. The difference may be negligible to gamers themselves, however, as Yerli also remarked that "it'll look and feel probably the same" on both platforms.
"The CE3 runs currently at more or less the same quality bar," Yerli asserted. "I say more or less because the engine still optimizes itself to power of the platforms' intrinsics. So the PS3 will run slightly better here, it'll look and feel probably the same, but the engine is diverting computation needs to power subsystems available to the PS3, and the 360 differently, and PC differently."
Yerli seemed a bit unsure of himself, but it's nice to know that the engine will, at the very least, run equally well on both platforms.

Take that MS... LOL, I'm just kidding; in the end it comes down to how the developers use it.

yeah but the thing is is that with the bluray drive, developers will be able to fully utilize this graphics engine to the fullest capability and really come out with some crazy immersive games in the next few years....the 360 chumps are still stuck with dvd's and all that crappy compression that comes with it

Yeah, We'll just have to wait and see. It's all how developers use what they've got. Both consoles are on equal footing as far as raw power goes, when you consider the different gpu/cpu setups they both use, both have their advantages/disadvantages. The 360 has a slight advantage with it's gpu, and the PS3 has a slight advantage with its cpu. If developers can independantly make work of each strenghth, the end result should be a product that's equal on both platforms.

Well thats good. We all know the 360 version will look really good and if the PS3 can outperform that slightly, we know the PS3 version will be just as good and not some skimpy port.

interesting. from the video it looked to me like the 360 version looked better. it was especially evident in the lighting, shadows, and shaders.

i'll believe it when i see it. We always get a developer talking about a game or program will run equal or better on our beloved PS3... But then we find out the hard way they lied

I think OnLive will run as good or better than PS3 or 360. CE3 will be awesome, but soon it wont matter what system its on, because next-gen will be a 1 console gaming, thanks to OnLive!!! They just need to work on the latency, but as far as system power, it cant be beat... so cryengine 3 will be easy for OnLive servers to handle, since they wont have to depend on a single home console with limited processing power. Now dont get me wrong, I own both 360 and PS3, and they're good, but wouldnt you like to play Killzone 3 and Gears of War 3 on 1 system? OnLive is the next big thing...Finally, CRYSIS 2 on a 50 inch plasma!!!

We have heard developers say this kind of thing before and it turned out to be a load of bs. Either way judging from the videos I've seen this engine looks great on both consoles.

@ 19...hold up yo.....we don't even know what the fee is going to be for OnLive....if it's even $25.00 a month that's $300.00 a year...it's like buying a new console every year....so it may not even be a cost effective product, even if it does look cool as heck

What I got from this was "Damn, we'll have to admit it's better on PS3, but we don't want to say by how much, because then we'll lose 360 software sales".
Also why are people talking about how OnLive will run this? Seriously, you'd be as well speculating about the Playstation 9000 (or over 9000)

At leat with the engines current state the PS3 version looks and plays better. All you need to do is watch the HD comparisson video. The PS3 version is more crisp and it has less slowdowns and better effects (just look the explosion effects in the wall and you will see..)

The thing about this engine, it's multiplatform. It is designed to run on both systems well, with maybe PS3 being slightly better. However if this engine was developed only for the PS3, I'm sure we would see a much better engine. As this is a multiplatform engine it will not utilize the PS3 to it's fullest like Killzone 2, Uncharted, MGS4, etc.

Actually that statement from the dev makes sense now, when I observed the video, I could see some textures pop-in (hope that's the righ term) in 360 video (speficially trees). Before I thought it was the video, and Im still not leaving out that possibility, however as the man himself said, difference is minimal at best.

Its not that minimal actually...cause the 360 at least from the video, has slower frame rate very visible in the fire section, more pop ins, actually i don't remember seen pop ins on the PS3 footage..a lot blurry in textures very visible on the sea section, and the effects (explosion) aren't that good as the Ps3 version. Are all these minimal?

360 has unreal engine and ps3 has CryEngine....just another blow to the xbots and shows ps3 is more powerful.

@39 I only noticed tree texture pop-ins. And again, I won't leave out the fact that some framerate issues such as those you mentioned might be due to the video itself. I never mentioned any pop-ins in PS3, but now that you mention it, I did notice some in trees, but it was less than 360 though. In any case, I am not a 360 nor PS3 fanboy if you think I'm trying to say one version is better over the other, and for your assurance I only have PS3 for a console. My statement was based on what I just said basically, so I said minimal.

Graphics on the two consoles might be practically the same right now, but as we all know, developers are continually learning how to maximize the processing power of the PS3, and estimates are that the PS3 is going to blow the xbox 360 away in graphics by 2013/2014. So its really only a matter of time.

just diss this engine and start using the killzone 2 one.
leave cryengine only for jungle games. the buildings in the trailer look as bad as those in ninja gaiden sigma (which i own, and love... but graphics are 5 or 6/10)
