Sony has moved to quash rumors suggesting that the platform holder may release a PlayStation 3 without Blu-ray functionality, stating that the next-gen movie format “will always be part” of the machine.
The firm’s marketing manager, Kim Nguyen, told SAI: “That would pretty much destroy the PS3’s backbone, our games were built on Blu-ray. Quote that: Blu-ray will always be part of PS3."
Nguyen’s comments come following speculation voiced by analyst Mick Hickey, who suggested that "Sony is working on a non-Blu-ray PS3 console" in an effort to reduce hardware costs.
