Develop has caught wind that a number of Sony’s internal studios have already begun preliminary work on PlayStation 4 software.
While the site notes that PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will remain a “major focus” of the platform holder for many years to come, a source claims a number of projects for the Japanese giant’s next home console are currently in the early stages of development.
However, the source didn’t divulge which of Sony’s sixteen first-party developers are currently working on games for the next-generation console.
The news comes after Develop was informed that Microsoft aims to release the successor to the Xbox 360 in 2013, with a full reveal planned for E3 of that year.
Sony, however, has frequently reiterated that it has no plans to release a new home console anytime soon, having committed to a 10-year cycle for PS3. Back in February this year, Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai said the electronics giant was “not deliberating on PS4.”
Unsurprisingly, a spokesperson for Sony has declined to comment. Stay tuned.
