PSN generates over $1 million for Japanese relief effort

PlayStation Network-driven relief efforts for last month’s Japanese earthquake and tsunami disaster have raised over $1 million, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has revealed.

Donations topped the ¥109.6 million mark, which equates to approximately $1.3 million. PSN users are able to contribute funds to the relief via the PlayStation Store.

Representative Corporate Executive Officer and Executive Deputy President of SCEI, Kazuo Hirai, said of the milestone: “We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by Great East Japan Earthquake.”

He added: “While we continue to make every effort to help the recovery of the affected communities in the region, I would like to express our gratitude to every single PlayStation user across the world who made a contribution to the effort.”

Donations are channelled directly into the American Red Cross’s Japanese relief fund, the British Red Cross in Europe, and the Central Community Chest of Japan. The relief effort itself is currently active in more than 40 countries.
