IGN reports that inside sources have confirmed the rumored PlayStation 4 — codenamed Orbis — will use two separate AMD chips (Radeon HD 7670 GPU and AMD’s A8-3850 APU) for graphics and processing.
Citing unknown sources, IGN says that the chips rumored to be in the PS4 are slightly modified versions of existing hardware.
Apparently, the Orbis will sport a quad-core 2.9GHz processor (the A8-3850), along with an integrated graphics chip that works together with a 1GHz DirectX 11-enabled card (Radeon HD 7670). The system is expected to have “up to 1GB of dedicated VRAM.”
The Radeon HD 7670 is a slightly upgraded version of last year’s HD 6670 – the graphics card rumored to be in the next Xbox.
Looking at these chipsets, if this was indeed the case, it seems Sony has indeed decided to drop the Cell processor technology used in the PlayStation 3.
As of right now, Sony has yet to confirm any of these rumors as true. However, if these rumors are anything to go by, then both Sony and Microsoft will have relatively equally powered machines going head-to-head next generation.
