Gamescom 2012: PS Vita won’t get a price cut this year

PlayStation Vita won’t receive a price cut this year, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said.

Asked by Eurogamer if the hardware giant planned on lowering the cost of its new handheld this year, he replied: “No, it’s too early.”

While he revealed that Sony’s engineers are working on reducing costs, Yoshida-san said the firm’s goal right now is adding value for consumers with a variety of bundle offers.

"Of course, cost reduction is one area our engineering team is working on. But we just launched the platform earlier this year. It takes time to do so.”

"At a certain point in the future we would like to address the pricing issue for some of the people who are waiting. But this year we are trying to add value by creating different types of bundles. We announced we will provide LittleBigPlanet Vita bundle pack. That’s affordable for people who are looking for a good deal."

PS Vita was released in Japan last December and hit U.S. and European shelves in February 2012.

Despite early success, the handheld has failed to maintain momentum due to a lack of must-have titles, something which Sony hopes to rectify with new releases such as LittleBigPlanet, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified and Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation.
