Resident Evil 3 remake unlikely, says scenario writer

The scenario writer for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis has said that Capcom would likely never attempt to remake the classic PlayStation survival horror title.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Yasuhisa Kawamura, who worked with Capcom on the project back in 1999, said he would ‘never turn down’ the offer of working with the Japanese giant once again.

"I could never turn down such an offer [to work with Capcom again],"  said Kawamura-san. "I am very fond of Biohazard [the Japanese title for Resident Evil].

"To be honest, I would love to remake Biohazard 3 with today’s technology and skills," he continued. "However Capcom would never try that, and I am not that much of a valuable member to Capcom. The Biohazard series is created by Capcom’s most elite members. It’s hard to imagine myself fitting in with such a prestigious team. Even if I were to successfully work on a Biohazard 3 remake, there’s already Operation Racoon City and The Umbrella Chronicles. I doubt I have any chance."

Resident Evil 3, known as Biohazard 3: Last Escape in Japan, was released on the PlayStation nearly fifteen years ago in Europe. The game takes place 24 hours before and after the events of Resident Evil 2, and sees ex-S.T.A.R.S. member Jill Valentine attempting to escape zombie-infested Raccoon City while being pursued by the titular Nemesis.

"Our project was at that time called Biohazard 1.5, because it was set between 1 and 2," he explained. "Out of all of the current projects, Kamiya’s Biohazard 3 was the major one and it was presumed that more time would be needed to complete it. Eventually, Biohazard 3 was renamed Biohazard 4 – intended for the PlayStation 2 – while our spin-off Biohazard 1.5 project effectively filled the gap as the new Biohazard 3. However, we did not get to lengthen our schedule."

Biohazard 4 would eventually go through four different versions before Capcom settled on the final build, which was released in 2005. Kawamura-san was involved in the early builds of Biohazard 4, which included the now-infamous ‘Hookman’ version shown at E3 2003.

A HD version of Resident Evil remake is due for release tomorrow on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. Stay tuned to our review later today.
