Famed actor and writer David Hayter – the man who provided the gravel-toned suitability of Snake for a over a decade -has today Tweeted a Metal Gear Solid-related image that has sparked a debate as to whether it’s a subtle hint to a possible involvement in the latest title ‘The Phantom Pain’ or not.
The internet got into a fracas back in June of 2013 when the series’ mastermind Hideo Kojima confirmed to the gaming public that Hayter would not be reprising his role as Snake for the umpteenth time and instead it would be Hollywood actor Kiefer Sutherland taking the reins for the latest game.
The decision didn’t go down too well in a lot of quarters, with fans disappointed considering the fact that they had grown up with no-one else portraying the brash, battle-weary ruggedness of protagonist, Snake.
But now, Hayter has taken to his official Twitter page and uploaded an image of himself alongside Metal Gear Solid hero Snake with the in-game quotation of ”They played us like a damn fiddle!” – with some fans taking it as to mean that Hideo Kojima has played an elaborate ruse on Hayter’s involvement in the game.

It could be nothing, just a mere reflection of his feelings by using a line of dialogue from the actual game. Still, the irrational Metal Gear Solid fan boy in us would jump to the roof in glee if at the beginning of The Phantom Pain Hayter delivered a line of similar ilk to that of the infamous ”Kept you waiting, huh?” from Ground Zeroes. In which case, yes it’s been a while, David – too long. And with Koijima-san priding himself on misleading his fans all of the time, you truly never know. We’re aware that we’re grasping at straws here. But, still.
