PlayStation VR is scheduled for release in the first half of 2016, and while a price has yet to be confirmed, Sony has indicated that it will be positioned similarly to that of a new games console. The device currently has around 50 titles in development, and the latest reports suggest it requires an external processing unit—something which is conspicuously absent from the list of hardware specs listed above. Sony used its Paris Games Week press conference late last month to unveil a number of new projects for the device, including Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, Dreams, Gran Turismo Sport, Tekken 7, and many more.
PlayStation VR was previously known under the working title Project Morpheus, and was announced at GDC in March 2014. It wasn’t long before industry analyst Michael Pachter chimed in on the subject, describing the device as a ‘really bad move for Sony.’ Initial skepticism pointed out that Sony has backed failed tech in the past with PlayStation Move and 3D gaming, although the company has insisted its foray into virtual reality gaming won’t follow the same path. We went hands-on with PlayStation VR earlier this year, so be sure to find out what we thought in our dedicated feature.
