Nordic Games has seemingly confirmed a third instalment in the Darksiders franchise following the release of the Darksiders II: Deathinitive Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Speaking on the Steam community website, Nordic Games’ Reinhard Pollice, made it clear that the studio is looking to continue the popular action-adventure series, going so far as to name drop Darksiders 3 outright. While it’s not clear when we’ll actually get to see the game, it at least confirms the game is in the pipeline, presumably for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
"Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition was just the start,” said Pollice. “Since we acquired the franchise we were looking for options for doing a DS3. The remaster was just a way to get some spotlight on the franchise again, reactivate the community and have a better starting position for DS3.”
Darksiders was developed by Vigil Games and released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010, published by the now-defunct THQ. The sequel followed two years later, again for last-generation platforms, although by that point the future of the series became a little more clouded due to the folding of THQ in early 2013. It was at this point that Nordic Games acquired the IP alongside Red Faction, with the studio revealing its intention to speak with the creators of the franchise regarding a possible Darksiders 3. Sadly, Darksiders II didn’t meet THQ’s internal sales estimates, so whether or not the franchise is able to achieve commerical success in this day and age is another question altogether.
Hopefully we’ll hear something more concrete about Darksiders 3 in the not-too-distant future. The question is, do you want to see a new game in the series? Were you a fan of the previous titles?
