The developer behind Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has shed more light on the new dialogue options included in the hotly anticipated PlayStation 4 action-adventure sequel.
Speaking to PlayStation Access, Arne Meyer, Naughty Dog’s Community Strategist, revealed that players will be given the chance to select from different dialogue during key moments, but made it clear Uncharted 4 won’t offer anything on the scale of open-world games in this respect.
“One of the things we’ve always said about what our philosophy is, is…How do we give you more player choices, more player agency?” Meyer explained. “So, we were experimenting with this and it felt like the right thing to do at sort of key moments…To give you a little bit more feel that you’re having a choice of what’s happening.”
“We’re not going to go to the degree of an open world game,” he added. “We’re still going back to telling a linear narrative and you’re still going to get the major beats.”
Meyer added that more details regarding this feature may be revealed closer to the game’s release date on March 18, 2016. Sony showcased the dialogue choices in a new trailer for Uncharted 4 during its PlayStation Experience press conference over the weekend, which depicted a conversation between Nathan Drake and his brother, Sam. Naughty Dog recently defended its decision to cast a white voice actress in the role of Nadine Ross, a black South African mercenary.
Uncharted 4 will be the final chapter in Drake’s globe-trotting adventures, with Naughty Dog admitting it is difficult to imagine continuing the popular series without the cocky fortune hunter. While the future of Uncharted remains ambiguous, Naughty Dog has revealed that it has at least one more game in the pipeline for the PS4, although what this is remains unknown.
Uncharted 4 is currently enjoying its multiplayer beta period, which runs until December 13 and offers players a chance to see what improvements Naughty Dog has made to the formula.
