The developer behind the multi-million selling Uncharted franchise has said it has at least one more title for release on PlayStation 4 for the current hardware cycle.
Speaking with Finder, Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer said that while the studio isn’t sure of how long the current hardware generation will be around for, he’s confident that the California-based developer will be able to release at least one more game for Sony’s current-gen console. What that is, however, remains to be seen, as Meyer wouldn’t go into any details on Naughty Dog’s next title following Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
"I would hope so. I would hope we would release a game pretty soon. Yeah, our development cycles aren’t too long so and I have no idea how long this console generation really is going to last, but, yeah, there’s no doubt it should be in this console generation for sure. I’m sure there’s some big master plan somewhere, in terms of what the cycles are. We usually find out about the new hardware once they’re actually ready to give us development kits even if they’re early. We don’t know ahead of time when that cycle ends, we just have to focus on making the best game we can on the hardware we do have.
"I mean I have no doubt – I don’t know what the timelines are – but we have at least one, maybe two games left in the console generation, maybe more. Clearly we can release a game really late in a console generation and do well, right?"
Quite what Naughty Dog has up its sleeves is anyone’s guess at this point, although most of us are probably expecting a sequel to The Last of Us. While nothing has been confirmed at the time of writing, the studio has admitted to discussing a possible The Last of Us 2 internally, and Sony has said it would welcome a sequel to the critically-acclaimed horror title. Aside from that, voice actor Nolan North seemingly confirmed that The Last of Us 2 is in development during a chat with fans earlier this year.
The Last of Us was released on PS3 in June 2013 and picked up overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics, eventually going on to sell seven million copies worldwide. The game was later ported to the PS4 last summer as The Last of Us Remastered, offering enhanced visuals and other features. Naughty Dog also supplemented the game’s single-player campaign with the DLC expansion, Left Behind, which focuses on the character of Ellie prior to the main storyline.
