Hideo Kojima’s new PS4 game isn’t related to Metal Gear or Silent Hills

Hideo Kojima’s newly-announced PlayStation 4 project as an independent developer will not be related to Metal Gear or Silent Hills, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) has revealed.

The format holder confirmed that while the new title will be a console exclusive to PS4, it will eventually make its way to PC some time after. Furthermore, the game is “something completely new” and Sony confirmed it will “provide support [to the game’s developer] as necessary.”

From those comments, we can safely deduce that Kojima-san’s new game won’t be coming to the Xbox One, although this only pertains to his first title; it’s unknown what the Metal Gear creator’s plans are beyond his debut title as an independent developer.

Said Sony in a Q&A today: "Kojima is an extremely creative and passionate game designer who has made countless contributions to PlayStation and the gaming industry. By having Kojima develop his first independent title to PS4, we believe that we can deliver completely new gaming experiences made possibly only by Kojima, to gaming fans worldwide. We are not disclosing further details on how this agreement was realized."

Kojima-san announced his departure from Konami overnight, where he confirmed that he’s set up his own studio, effectively a rebirth of Kojima Productions. The news has been a long time coming, with Kojima-san having been involved in a rather public spat with his bosses at Konami during the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Despite this, he was adamant that he has ‘no regrets’ over the whole affair, and that he will continue to create games for the rest of his life.

Unfortunately, it does mean that Kojima-san will no longer be involved with the Metal Gear series after more than 25 years with the franchise. We’ve got our fingers crossed for a future collaboration with Guillermo del Toro.
