The developer behind the hotly anticipated Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End has spoken at length about its difficulties in finding resolution for series protagonist Nathan Drake.
Speaking during an interview with The Guardian, Naughty Dog’s Ricky Cambier said that he doesn’t feel that one specific moment defines a person, although is confident that the Santa Monica outfit has delivered a fitting resolution for Nate in his final adventure.
“I don’t believe that any one moment defines any one of us,” said Cambier. “There will be no moment where you go ‘ohhh, that explains Nathan Drake!’ I think there will be a smaller ‘oh’ – if that makes sense. You’ll be able to connect a few more pieces.
“That was a big challenge: what is resolution for Nathan Drake? I think we achieved it, I hope that other people feel that way too.”
Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End is due out exclusively on PlayStation on May 10, 2016.
The game takes place three years after the events of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and sees Nate seduced by the prospect of nabbing a legendary pirate’s treasure, and thus embarks on another globetrotting journey—much to the chagrin of his wife, Elena.
However, this time around the cocky fortune hunter is joined by not only long-time mentor Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan, but also his brother Sam, who was presumed dead for many years.
Naughty Dog has attempted to spice up the formula by offering gamers larger environments to explore, as well as arming Drake with all-new brawling and stealth mechanics to aid him in combat.
The California-based developer has confirmed that this will be its last Uncharted game, and the last one to star Nathan Drake. However, it hasn’t ruled out the prospect of another developer taking over the series providing it’s good enough.
As for what the studio has next in line, there’s talk of a sequel to The Last of Us, which the company was exploring prior to development of Uncharted 4 ramping up a gear. It aims to revisit these prototypes once it has wrapped up the single-player DLC for Nate’s epic swan song.
The Uncharted series has sold over 21 million copies worldwide since its launch on the PlayStation 3 in 2007. The trilogy was remastered last year in the shape of The Nathan Drake Collection for PS4.
