The head of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios has confirmed that all of the company’s demos at E3 this year were running on regular PlayStation 4 hardware, not Neo as speculated.
Writing on Twitter, Shuhei Yoshida shot down rumors that the likes of God of War, Detroit and Days Gone were being powered by Sony’s updated hardware, stating, “Everything is on a standard PS4."
Sony announced the existence of the Neo just a week prior the E3 2016, although did not commit to a release date for the upgraded console.
This is in strike contrast to Microsoft, who unveiled two new pieces of hardware during its press conference: the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio. However, the latter won’t be released until holiday 2017, something which surprised Sony’s Andrew House regarding the timing of the reveal.
PS4 Neo to co-exist with regular PS4, release date rumored for holiday 2016
The PS4 Neo will feature enhanced specifications, allowing players to experience games with improved visual fidelity, with PS VR also rumored to benefit greatly from the new hardware. Sony stressed, however, that it is not a replacement for the regular console.
While a release date has yet to be confirmed, it is expected the Neo will be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show this September, with a launch date pegged anywhere between holiday 2016 and March 2017.
