Caligula, a Persona-like JRPG for PS Vita, arriving in the West next spring

Atlus USA have announced it’s partnering with Japanese publisher FuRyu to bring the PlayStation Vita role-playing game Caligula in North America and Europe in the spring of 2017 as a digital-only release with Japanese audio only.

Launching in Japan on June 23, Caligula is developed by Aquria, the studio behind Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment and Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization, with Takuya Yamanaka as the director. Most notable though is that Persona 1 and 2 scenario writer Tadashi Satomi is penning the game.

Character designs are by Oguchi, who worked on Kadokawa’s free-to-play browser game Kantai Collection (aka "KanColle"). You can view some of Oguchi’s art on his pixiv page.

The Matrix-esque story is set in the virtual world of Mobius, where the people live a three-year loop as students living the ideal high school life. Our main characters discover they aren’t living in the real world and form a group to return to reality. However, a few of them have dark trauma inside and were actually brought to Mobius as salvation by its creator, a vocal software named “μ.”

The “Imaginary Chain” battle system lets the player visualize the move before executing it and thus lets you anticipate how the enemy react. You can think of it somewhat like how professional chess players think a couple moves ahead. Check out the gameplay in action below:
