Resident Evil 2 director Hideki Kamiya has revealed that he was busy pestering his former buddies at Capcom for quite some time regarding the possibility of remaking the seminal 1998 survival horror sequel.
Speaking with Polygon, Kamiya, who now resides at Platinum Games, said he’s attempted to get Capcom’s Jun Takeuchi (the two are close drinking buddies, apparently) to overhaul Resident Evil 2 for a while now, though his former colleague always insisted he was too busy.
However, now that the remake is actually happening, Kamiya thinks that Capcom will do a bang up job of overhauling the classic PlayStation title.
“Just from a creator’s perspective, to know that something that you made still resonates, and people still want to play it, and that Capcom is going to invest all that time and energy into remaking it, is really an honor. That’s saying it, independent of the fact that one of my friends is making it. Looking at what Capcom is doing right now, and what they’re making, I have a lot of confidence that they’re going to knock it out of the park."
Resident Evil 2 Remake confirmed, but can we expect tank controls or a modern system?
Resident Evil 2 Remake was announced back in August 2015, although aside from a logo we’ve yet to see anything meaningful on the project. However, its developer has said that it’s hopeful to capture the spirit of the original game.
The original Resident Evil 2 was released in 1998 for the PSone, and remains one of the best-selling games in the series, selling over four million copies to date. The game was later ported to Nintendo 64, GameCube, PC and Dreamcast.
Right now it remains unknown if the remake will adhere to the ‘classic’ style of Resident Evil or adopt a more modern system similar to recent entries in the franchise.
Outside of Resident Evil 2 Remake, Capcom is also working on Resident Evil 7, which is due for release on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One in January 2017. It’s also sprucing up Resident Evil 4 and 5 for current-generation systems this year.
