Speaking during an interview with Gameswelt.TV, Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida revealed that the release of PlayStation Neo won’t result in a shorter lifecycle for the three-year-old PlayStation 4.
"PS4 is PS4," Yoshida-san said, when asked if the Neo would reduce the traditional 5-6 console cycle. "[The] new high-end PS4 is still PS4, so the lifecycle is not going to be shorter."
However, the executive wasn’t quite ready to go into any specific detail on the new machine, saying Sony will reveal more "when we have enough information on preparation".
Microsoft however has taken the opposite approach, announcing two new hardware revisions for the Xbox One at E3 last week in the shape of the Xbox One S and the Xbox Scorpio—something which surprised Yoshida-san.
"I was surprised [Microsoft announced Scorpio]," he said. "I was not expecting them to talk about [it]. It’s very very super interesting what they are doing."
The PS4 Neo was announced the week before E3, where Sony chief Andrew House confirmed the device would offer increased visual fidelity among other enhancements.
