Watch 17 minutes of Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star gameplay

One anticipated game in XSEED Games’ upcoming lineup of titles is Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star, developed by its parent company Marvelous, for the PlayStation 4 and Vita.

Gameplay-wise, Extella borrows some elements from other hack-and-slash titles like Dynasty Warriors while featuring popular characters from the Fate franchise, which has encompassed visual novels, games, and anime adaptations.

An added level of strategy and urgency is involved with building your Regime Matrix — basically capturing territories called Sectors and keeping them under your rule. To completely capture a sector, you must destroy the Boss Servant and once you have, the basic enemies will disappear. The opposition being able to take back a Sector means you have to keep on your toes and monitor the on-screen map for any attacks.

Plants are another major enemy you need to prioritize defeating, since they produce the basic enemies in numbers that can become overwhelming

Writing the Extella’s story is Kinoko Nasu, the author of the original Fate/stay night visual novel, returning to the franchise he started. The events in the game take place after Fate/Extra in a world ruled by the all-powerful lunar supercomputer named Moon Cell Automaton. Adversaries from Fate/stay night, Fate/Apocrypha and Fate/Grand Order will appear for you to battle in a digital realm named “SE.RA.PH.”
